I NAME
The Society shall be called ‘THE NORTH OF ENGLAND OTOLARYNGOLOGY SOCIETY’
II OBJECTS
The objects of the Society shall be:
to provide opportunities for discussions of the work of the specialty with a view to the maintenance of a good standard of service; and for social intercourse amongst its members.
III CONSTITUTION
The Society shall consist of Honorary, Ordinary and Corresponding Members.
Honorary Members subject to ratification at an ordinary meeting the Council shall have the power to elect colleagues distinguished in the specialty to honorary membership.
Ordinary Members are those who practise in the former counties of Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumberland, Westmoreland, Durham and Northumberland, Cheshire, North Derbyshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man.
Corresponding Members are those who practise outside this area.

Those working as Specialist Registrars and other junior grades are encouraged to attend meetings, but they and the Corresponding Members shall not vote in the election of Members nor shall they have any voice in the general as distinguished from the scientific business of the Society. In the scientific business they have equal privileges with Ordinary Members.
V ELECTION OF MEMBERS
Election to Membership (ordinary or corresponding) of the Society shall be open to the following holders of substantive posts;

Consultants in Otolaryngology and graduates in associated sciences.

Specialists Registrars in Otolaryngology and related disciplines.

General Practitioners holding a Clinical Assistant post, Associate Specialists and Staff

Grade Doctors working in Otolaryngology and related disciplines
- Applications from all prospective members shall be considered by the Council and voted on at an ordinary or annual meeting. Applications shall be submitted on the appropriate form, which must be signed by the proposer and seconder who shall be Ordinary Members of the Society.
VI OFFICERS AND COUNCIL
The Officers of the Society shall be elected from the Ordinary Members and they shall consist of a President, Vice-President, immediate Past President, Secretary and Treasurer. These, together with the six other Ordinary Members, shall constitute the Council. Five shall form a quorum. The Council shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting. Not more than two shall represent the same city.
The President shall hold office for two years and not be eligible for immediate re-election. The President shall not be succeeded in the office by a member from the same city. Two of the Ordinary Members shall retire in rotation after three years in office. The Secretary and Treasurer may be elected for four consecutive years, but at the end of that time shall not be eligible for immediate re-election. The Council shall have the power of filling a vacancy which may occur in their number between one Annual Meeting and another.
VII SUBSCRIPTIONS
The subscription for Ordinary and Corresponding Members shall be determined by the Council.
VII MEETINGS
Meetings will be held at suitable dates and places to be arranged by the Council in Spring, Summer and Autumn. The meetings shall consist of a Council Meeting, a Clinical/Scientific Meeting and an Ordinary Business Meeting of all members. The Annual General Meeting will be held at the Autumn meeting.
Changes in the constitution may be made at an Annual General Meeting. The proposed changes must be circulated to all members not less than three weeks before the meeting. Any changes must be agreed by a majority of not less than two-thirds of those present and entitled to vote.
Each meeting will be arranged on invitation of one or more Members working in the same centre. At such meetings the inviting Member or Members shall be responsible for the detailed arrangements of the meeting and for collection of most of the cases shown for discussion, but any other Member may intimate that he/she wishes to show one or more cases, provided that the necessary notes of the cases are sent in time for enclosure in the Agenda.
Reading of papers and occasional guest lectures to the Society will be allowed if time permits.
