THE GEORGE SEED PRIZE

for the best academic paper from a trainee in Otorhinolaryngology in the North of England

 PRIZE £1000

 Rules for the 2012 Prize:

The prize will only be awarded if the best submission is felt to attain a suitable high standard.

 

Applicants

Applicants must be trainees (SHOs, SpRs, fellows or staff-grades) in ENT in the North of England. Only one paper can be accepted from each applicant.

The Paper

The paper must be unpublished at the time of submission.

Preparation of manuscripts

Submissions should be in the form of a clinical or scientific paper. Papers can be submitted as a Microsoft word document maximum of 5000 words. Double spacing should be used throughout. Pages should be numbered consecutively. Papers should be set out as follows with each section beginning on a separate sheet; Title page, Abstract and key words, Text, Acknowledgements, References, Tables, Captions or illustrations.

The last date for submission will be in 5th January 2012. No applications will be accepted after this time.

The Title page  should be brief and specific. The authors details and instutution and contact details listed

Abstract (250 words maximum)  should give a concise summary of the article.  A list of 2 to 6 keywords should be given.

The style of writing should conform with acceptable English usage and syntax. Spellings should be taken from the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English. Authors are advised to use the terminology recommended by the ISO-IEC, Nomina Anatomica as used in the latest edition of Gray 's Anatomy and WHO list of approved names for drugs. All audiograms must be plotted to ISO standards.

Text

Text should be times new roman 12 point font in black.

Illustrations

Photographs should be well-contrasted prints. Line figures are preferred, particularly for operative steps. Photomicrographs should state the magnification.

References to figures should be by Arabic numerals (e.g. Figure 3) and they should be numbered in order of appearance. Legends for the figures should be placed below the figure.

Tables should be given Arabic numbers (e.g. Table 3). Units should appear in parentheses in the column headings and not in the body of the table. Words or numerals should be repeated on successive lines; 'ditto' or 'do' should not be used.

References

References (Harvard Style) should be cited in the text as (author, date) and should be listed at the end of the paper. In the bibliography references should be quoted as shown and in alphabetical order.

The responsibility of checking references rests with the author.

Results and Prize Giving

The winner of the George Seed Prize will be informed before the Spring 2012 meeting. The winner of the prize will be given 15 minutes to present their paper and will receive their £1000 prize after their presentation.
